The Tower of London at night

The Tower stands at the point where the Roman City wall reached the River but is outside the present City of London, in Tower Hamlets. Begun in 1078 by William the Conqueror, who built the central White Tower with its unaltered Norman chapel, it is now dominated by 13th Century walls. The oldest and most celebrated fortress in the country, it has been a royal palace, a place for assemblies and treaties, a prison and even a zoo. Today theTower is one of London’s leading tourist attractions and is the treasury of the Crown Jewels.
